Even if you’re one of those people who’s all about seizing the day and trying something new, it’s best to let the experts grab the bull by the horns at the
Grand National Rodeo, Horse and Stock Show. Whether or not you’ve ever been to a rodeo before, mosey on down to Daly City’s Cow Palace April 4-12 for a rip-roaring annual event that is grand fun for adults and children alike.
The rodeo is a showcase for top performers in a variety of shows, with daring cowboys and cowgirls putting their talents on display with bareback riding, barrel racing, steer wresting, bull riding, tie-down roping and saddle bronco riding.
Arena highlights include Tomas Garcilazo, a rope artist well-versed in la charreria, the Mexican equestrian sport; Crash Cooper, a rodeo clown who performs crowd-pleasing stunts and comedy acts; and the Cow Palace Drill Team, performing choreographed flag-carrying routines on horseback.
The associated stock show lets you see cattle, sheep, goats, swine and even rabbits all vying for blue ribbons. If you’re an animal lover, check out the sheep-herding trials, where lovable sheepdogs show off their skills.
Other attractions include the Grand National Art Show & Sale; Miss Grand National competition; live country music performances; and a wine tasting event (after all, this is Northern California). And don’t forget the delicious, down-home grub—barbecued beef included.
Whether this is your first or your fiftieth rodeo, you’re bound to have a good time. —Stephanie Soong
