July 4: Radio Disney presents 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular. This year, it’s an out of this world experience with music from 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Planets and Star Wars. Don’t miss the Star Trek retrospective featuring special guest George Takei, who played Sulu on the original Star Trek series. Featuring the San Francisco Symphony, the event ends with a bang. July 17-Aug 8: Music@Menlo presents Being Mendelssohn, the annual chamber music festival commemorates the 200th anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn’s birth with an impressive lineup of world-renowned musicians, scholars and musicologists, as well as several talented young artists. The three-week festival features symposia, classes and concert programs, including From Bach (July 18-20, 8pm, except Sun, 6pm); Genius Proclaimed (July 24), with selections from Beethoven; and Midsummer Night Dreams (July 27-29, 8pm all days), with selections from Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann. Thru Aug 27: Scion Music In the Park. San Jose kicks off summer with its highly anticipated outdoor concert series, a downtown tradition for more than 20 years. In July, rock out with classic rock group The Tubes (July 2); reggae bands Eek-a-Mouse (July 9) and Pato Banton and The Now Generation (July 16); pop/rock artist Matt Nathanson (July 23), and Colin Hay, formerly of pop group Men at Work (July 30).
