Escape the trends of mainstream cinema and discover films that matter at San Jose’s cutting-edge film festival, where the spirit of recognizing independent and foreign films is still paramount. Now in its 18th year, this 12-day event (February 27 through March 9) features more than 150 short and feature films across all genres and from around the world, including narratives, documentaries and animated films. Over 100 first-time, emerging film artists are represented from 34 countries, and pay close attention to these—they may well be tomorrow’s brightest stars.
In addition to the screenings, Cinequest also offers forums on the art and science of filmmaking led by showbiz professionals.
Highlighting the festival are the Maverick Spirit events, where Cinequest honors the most daring and unique Hollywood players. This year’s events include:

March 8: Actor, producer and humanitarian Danny Glover is presented with a Maverick Spirit Award. A moderated conversation follows the presentation of a film of his choice. (California Theatre)
Of course, what’s a festival without a little glitz and glamour? Expect live music and performances; cocktails and appetizers; and schmoozing with the up-and-coming directors and actors.
