Tucked away between two tall towers, inconspicuous Birk’s conducts business in the same meticulous fashion as its high tech neighbors—with attention to even the microchip-sized details. From the sophisticated decor to the elegant demi-glace, this refined steakhouse gets everything just right... The chefs clearly pay as close attention to the grill as the patrons do to their palm pilots.
Despite its unconventional location, Birk’s is in no way a secret. Now in it’s 17th year, Birk’s is popular with locals for both its reasonably priced lunches and elaborate dinners.
Entering Birk’s is like leaving the office and boarding an elegant cruise ship. The staff sails diners away from the business bustle and into plush, rich booths. Black and white tile floors offset the dark wood, while glittering gold and cream accents hint at the culinary delights to come. The relaxed yet slightly serious atmosphere and large exhibition kitchen suggest that your cruise destination is a foreign land where the natives specialize in the art of the grill.
The service is professional and attentive; steaks are cooked to specification, even if your preference happens to be "extra rare." There’s no shying away from searing at this red meat temple, where prime rib is wood smoked, New York steaks are dry aged and t-bones are covered with blue cheese.
An extensive wine list and selection of draught beers compliment the entrees. For non-locals, try the Anchor Steam beer, San Francisco’s legendary handcrafted brew. A truly executive experience is to be had with selections of single malt scotches and cigars.
For eats, a good place to start is with the calamari appetizer; the squid is coated with cornmeal and garlic, transforming a chain restaurant standard into a Birk’s favorite.
Halibut with a stripe of béarnaise sauce flakes and dances its way into your senses. The filet mignon covered in peppercorn sauce starts off spicy; then slowly melts to reveal the flavor of the beef.
Each piece de resistance is accompanied by potatoes—naturally!—served mashed or whole and buttered. Grilled asparagus and creamed spinach prove that Birk’s can do more than steak; as is evidenced by the organic vegetarian options.
Save room for Birk’s signature carrot cake, laced with orange. Savor it with port, cognac, or an expertly made espresso.
