Here are few spots that are favorites of the locals.
Canada Road
This is a bonanza for runners, hikers, skate boarders and cyclists when it is closed to cars from Edgewood Rd. to Hwy. 92 on the first, third and fourth Sundays of each month, 9am-4pm. The closure allows a scenic eight-mile out-and-back trip through gently rolling countryside past the elegant Filoli Estate, the Pulgas Water Temple & Crystal Springs Reservoir. For the slightly more intrepid, a dirt trail a few yards west of the road offers a steeper and more challenging alternative route. To get there from Hwy. 101, take Hwy. 92 west. As you approach I-280, follow the sign to Half Moon Bay, turn left at the first traffic light and park. From I-280, take either the Hwy. 92 or Edgewood Rd. exit and park at Canada Rd.
Sawyer Camp Road
This winding asphalt path goes through six miles of wooded glades and open meadows along the eastern shore of Crystal Springs Reservoir. Open daily, it offers beautiful scenery throughout its length. The northern two miles are fairly hilly; the rest is gently rolling. Deer are frequently seen grazing calmly within a few feet of the trail, especially toward dusk. Walkers, runners, cyclists and skateboarders are all welcome. Get there from the south by following Crystal Springs Rd. (Rte. 35) north from the Hwy. 92 traffic light at the causeway across Crystal Springs Reservoir. From the north end, take the Hillcrest Blvd. exit from I-280 in Millbrae, go west a short distance.
Coastside Trail
The unpaved trail offers an easy 3-mile walk or bike ride along the coastal bluffs overlooking Half Moon Bay State Beach. From the north, start at Mirada Rd., a block off Hwy 1 on Magellan. From the south, start at the west end of Kelly Ave. in Half Moon Bay.
Sequoia Audubon Trail
Located at Pescadero Beach on Hwy. 1, this bird-watcher’s delight is a one-mile loop through the Pescadero Marsh Natural Preserve. 200 different species of birds rest, feed or nest during the year. The Preserve is also home to 380 species of plants and 50 different types of animals.
